Nicholas' First Bream - 8/1/2004 -

When my cousin, Frank called to tell me that he was coming to spend a few days with me, he also let me know that his son, Nicholas, wanted Uncle Jim to take him fishing. Frank and I had spent many wonderful summer days as children with our grandfather fishing for crappie and bream (an Arkansas name for bluegill sunfish). I wanted to be sure that Nicholas had a similar experience to look back on. He had already caught a bass and some Illinois perch, but this would be his first bream fishing trip. I knew just the spot.

We launched the boat on a sunny August afternoon at Loch Lomond, one of several excellent fishing lakes in Bella Vista, Arkansas. I figured the bream would be deep so we fished 8-10 foot depths with 1/125 oz. black marabou jigs and split shot on ultra light spinning rods. Sometimes we tipped the jig with a piece of red worm. The action was pretty steady, but the precocious Nicholas wanted to catch a keeper bream by himself without Dad or Uncle’s interference. It took about an hour for him to master the technique. The grin of a six year old who has achieved his first unassisted bream catch is a picture worth remembering.
